Alaska Veteran's Memorial and Talkeetna

When we were getting ready to leave Denali, David said he wasn't feeling well, and by the time we got on down the road a bit, he was really feeling terrible.  In spite of this, we stopped to pay our respects at the Alaska Veteran's Memorial, a very impressive monument to all those from Alaska who have served.

By a strange coincidence, in the parking lot at the Memorial we met a couple, the Klines (or Clines) who live less than 1/2 mile from us!  She is also a retired Clay County teacher and we know lots of the same people.   Small world!

By the time we reached our campground, Trapper Creek Inn and RV Park, David was feeling worse and Jackie also showed signs of not feeling well.  They decided to pass on going in to Talkeetna, hoping that rest would help them feel better.

On the Talkeetna Spur Road, we saw some amusing  flower "pots" that we remembered from our last trip here.

The town is very quaint, historic, and artsy with lots of gift shops and places to eat.  Talkeetna is also noteworthy as being the only town in the U.S. that has a cat for its mayor.  We had hoped to see Mayor Stubbs, who is known to hang out at Nagley's General Store, but he no longer entertains visitors due to his age of about 19 years. They did, of course, have tee shirts of him for sale.

We did have a lovely dinner at The Wildflower, followed by ice cream, of course, at the Wake and Shake, which makes its own ice cream in a John Deere powered machine.  It was good.

Back at the campground, we were saddened to hear that David was about the same and Jackie was worse, so we left them alone to try to sweat it out (and to avoid their germs).
